George Ziata is a South Australian guitar maker, building guitars since 1991, specialising in lattice braced classical guitars.
The Ziata Guitars workshop is dedicated to building classical guitars and is equipped with state of the art equipment. Only the finest quality timbers are used and by utilising the most technologically advanced methods and materials all guitars posses the very best quality sound and workmanship.
Soundboard Construction:
Lattice-braced carbon fibre reinforced soundboard design, made by combining traditional designs with the modern lattice design giving the guitars their special character. The advantage of a lattice design is its lighter weight, superior strength and the shape of the lattice stimulates the soundboard more than a traditional fan-braced guitar. The soundboard is domed which creates strength and a finer quality sound.
12th fret position:
The 12th fret is slightly further away from the body than other classical guitars. The body and neck meet at the 14th fret, this is commonly found on acoustic steel-string guitars. Ziata found this feature to be more useful when playing in the higher positions on the fretboard. In moving the 12th fret Ziata was able to fit in a 20th fret without obstructing the sound hole and interfering with the projection of sound.
Guitar Neck:
The neck is made from Honduras Mahogany and reinforced with a carbon fibre rod. The method I use for gluing the carbon fibre infuses the fibre to the timber.
Lacquer finish:
A two part lacquer provides the guitar with very good protection and is the best available modern blended Lacquer for finishing guitars. This lacquer provides a finish that looks deep and by applying a thinner coat it prevents muffling of the sound. After full curing of the finish the guitar is then buffed to a very high gloss.

This Cedar concert Chamber guitar, is by Master Luthier Yulong Guo who is a world-class professional concert guitar.

For this Chamber Concert model the latest classical guitar technology was used: double-top with two ultra-thin layers of high-quality sound woods on either side of a layer of Nomex to give the strength needed for the durability of the top.
Back and sides are made of solid Indian Rosewood. The arched “violin back” gives the guitar amazing sound projection and volume, making it ideal for concert performances.

This guitar has only had two owners and was built for Raffaele Agostino a well know Sydney based performer, recording artist and Sydney conservatorium teacher who together with Janet Agostino founded the Sydney Guitar Quartet.
Raff used the 1996 Jeff Kemp in the recording of the Australian seminal work in 1998 he released a CD “Whispering from the cedar top” of solo guitar music of Australian composers Richard Charlton and Phillip Houghton.
He is currently the Artistic Director of the Classical Guitar Society, Sydney and Assistant Lecturer in Guitar at the Sydney Conservatorium.
This guitar was later acquired by one of Janet Agostino’s Students.
About This Guitar
Jeff Kemp began building guitars in 1982. His workshop is located at Rockvale, 35km from Armidale in the New England Area of NSW Australia.
The area is part of the Northern Tablelands with an elevation of 1000 metres and a dry climate ideal for guitar making.
His approach to building is to combine the finest elements of a traditionally built guitar with contemporary materials, building methods and design. The result is a powerful, well-balanced guitar with enhanced volume and projection.
These guitars have been described as “New Generation” instruments which are capable of projecting their rich sound in very large concert spaces.
Jeff has a book currently in print on the characteristics of wood available in the Australian market called appropriately enough “The Australian Timber Buyers Guide” Commissioned by – Skills Book Publishing. Sydney 1994 .
Current production is around ten guitars per year. “I was planning to record on guitar but due to the current global situation i decided to sell off some of my guitar collection.”
Precis
In his own words Jeff's approach to building is to combine the finest elements of a traditionally built guitar with a blend of traditional and contemporary materials, building methods and design. The result is a powerful, well-balanced guitar with enhanced volume and projection.
These guitars have been described as "New Generation" instruments which can project their rich sound in very large concert spaces.
They respond to the slightest of touches and are capable of being driven hard without being overpowered, resulting in an extremely wide dynamic range.
Most importantly, this style of building provides the musician with a vast palette of tonal variation to explore a complex array of sounds within the context of the purest and richest timbre.
More about the building of this guitar’s Construction:
The overall design idea is to build an instrument with heavy and extremely stiff back and sides, allowing greater freedom in soundboard construction.
Using this method, less energy is taken from the soundboard by thin sides and there is less interaction between the back and the top via the air volume. This means that the back is not trying to behave like a second soundboard.
The result of this is a more efficient soundboard capable of greater volume and dynamic range. This gives the guitarist a very usable palette of tonal possibilities which span the entire (extremely wide) dynamic range of the instrument.
The backs and sides are made of Brazilian Rosewood with the backs being arched in the same style as a cello back.
This is achieved by laminating Brazilian Rosewood with epoxy resin to a critical thickness allowing the desired stiffness with no internal bracing.
With the thickness involved in achieving the desired effect, it is almost impossible to construct using solid wood. The forces of expansion and contraction of solid wood construction at these thicknesses would eventually result in joint failure and severe cracking.
Jeff uses cedar for soundboards almost exclusively as he prefers the warmer, darker sounds inherent in cedar. He does make spruce guitars but continues to receive more orders for cedar than spruce.
All braces are Balsa/Carbon Fibre composite and bracing patterns are of non-traditional design.
Necks are made from Honduras Mahogany and incorporate an adjustable truss rod which adjusts in both directions to counteract both back and forward bow. This allows Jeff to build the correct curvature into the fingerboard when he is making the guitar, and to allow for neck adjustment if nechttps://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2012-08-06-unique-guitar-a-joy-to-makemusic-onessary. Temperature and humidity changes do affect the neck, so the truss rod is available to allow adjustment if needed.
Material selection is of an extremely high standard and only the best ‘Master’ grade woods are selected and utilised in the construction of Jeff’s instruments.

Strumming beauty: James Grace strokes the hand-made guitar he acquired recently from a renowned Australian luthier. Classical guitars are not only capable of producing breathtakingly beautiful sound; they are also instruments of exquisite elegance. All the more so when the instrument has been handcrafted by a master luthier who produces only four to six instruments per year.
This is the kind of masterpiece James Grace (head of classical guitar studies at UCT’s South African College of Music) acquired recently. His handmade six-string classical guitar was produced by Jeff Kemp in a remote town near Armidale, halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, Australia. Grace says Kemp played his CDs in the workshop while he was making the guitar so that “he (Kemp) could try and recreate the same type of sound I was used to”. Grace is no stranger to Kemp’s craftsmanship. He bought one of Kemp’s guitars in 1995, second-hand.
His latest acquisition cost upward of R100 000.
After he fetched the guitar from Australia, all he wanted to do was to start playing it. “It felt a bit unfamiliar, but after spending a few hours just exploring the different sounds I could get from the guitar, I started to get used to it, and it became a joy to make music on,” says Grace.

This report synthesizes the impressions and evaluations of The Jeff Kemp Guitar from ourselves, the teachers and students of the Conservatory of Music, professional guitarists, senior guitar teachers and guitar friends. We believe that these evaluations are comprehensive, objective, and exciting.
We are here to talk to Mr. He Qing from Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Mr. Lai Kangkang and Mr. Guo Yucheng from Beijing Philharmonic Guitar Orchestra, Mr. Yang, Mr. Xu from Zhongqing Musical Instrument, Mr. Raimundo, Director of the Guitar China Club and his two friends, as well as other participants who participated in the test. This model is aimed at guitarists who are immersed in the dynamics of competitions and who need an instrument which is more powerful and easy to play, and which will give them confidence on stage. It is also designed to be played in chamber music contexts, where that added power will help the guitarist to mix with the other instrumentalists without suffering from the guitar’s all-too-common volume disadvantage.
But this is not all about power. The motivation for this project stems from the desire to increase volume but without losing tonal quality. This leads us to the special process for building the sound board for this model, which was inspired by studying guitars created by the German guitar-maker, Antonius Müller. His idea of a double sound board is the one that has interested me most in order to enhance timbre quality.
The result is a guitar which is more responsive, balanced and consistent, which has more sustain, is easier to control, and has better sound projection. Moreover, all of this is achieved without losing the rich timbre that makes the guitar such a special instrument. The possibility of timbre-loss was what worried me most throughout the early development of this model but whilst the sound is somewhat thinner than in the traditional model, this guitar also provides better-defined individual notes when four or more strings sound at the same time.
The use of contemporary materials such as carbon fiber and the thickness of the wood allows us to play with the rigidity and weight distribution in the structure of the guitar. This is crucial to achieve an instrument that will always give us the highest quality of tone in any dynamic range, for both pianissimo and fortissimo.

Elias Bonet has a very eclectic background. He graduated with a degree in industrial design from the EINA Centre for Art and Design in Barcelona and then studied classical and flamenco guitar at the Liceu Conservatory in the same city.
In the year 2000, Elias co-founded Lacreativa.com, a design studio, but in 2009 he left the world of industrial design to dedicate himself professionally to guitar-making.
It was by a chance meeting with the Yagüe brothers which provided Elias the opportunity to build his first guitar in their workshop after he tried to order one from them.
From the first cut of wood, Elias was spellbound by this new, mysterious world of lutherie. In addition to learning from the Yagüe brothers, Elias also befriended Juan Antonio Reyes Torres, another excellent guitar-maker who opened his doors to Elias.
After several years of apprenticing, Elias finally opened his own workshop in March of 2009 and has been building professionally on his own as an independent maker since then.

About Vicente Carrillo
Coming from a family of broadly experienced guitar makers - such experience dates back to 1755 - Vicente Carrillo has managed to skilfully combine historical heritage with progress, also incorporating ideas and advice from renowned luthiers and internationally famous guitarists.
Born and raised among guitars, he learned the trade naturally, yet he was always open to new contributions that would allow him to continue improving his work.
In 2010, the Castillian-Manchegan luthier Vicente Carrillo won the National Crafts Award, a prize that recognizes the quality of consolidated works. Such recognition was awarded to him due to his broad and consistent trajectory, and to the great prestige he enjoys among the string instruments' professionals.
His guitars are owned by some of the best guitarists of the national and international scene, among whom stand out Paco de Lucía and Tomatito.

This model is aimed at guitarists who are immersed in the dynamics of competitions and who need an instrument which is more powerful and easy to play, and which will give them confidence on stage. It is also designed to be played in chamber music contexts, where that added power will help the guitarist to mix with the other instrumentalists without suffering from the guitar’s all-too-common volume disadvantage.
But this is not all about power. The motivation for this project stems from the desire to increase volume but without losing tonal quality. This leads us to the special process for building the sound board for this model, which was inspired by studying guitars created by the German guitar-maker, Antonius Müller. His idea of a double sound board is the one that has interested me most in order to enhance timbre quality.
The result is a guitar which is more responsive, balanced and consistent, which has more sustain, is easier to control, and has better sound projection. Moreover, all of this is achieved without losing the rich timbre that makes the guitar such a special instrument. The possibility of timbre-loss was what worried me most throughout the early development of this model but whilst the sound is somewhat thinner than in the traditional model, this guitar also provides better-defined individual notes when four or more strings sound at the same time.
The use of contemporary materials such as carbon fiber and the thickness of the wood allows us to play with the rigidity and weight distribution in the structure of the guitar. This is crucial to achieve an instrument that will always give us the highest quality of tone in any dynamic range, for both pianissimo and fortissimo.

Elias Bonet has a very eclectic background. He graduated with a degree in industrial design from the EINA Centre for Art and Design in Barcelona and then studied classical and flamenco guitar at the Liceu Conservatory in the same city.
In the year 2000, Elias co-founded Lacreativa.com, a design studio, but in 2009 he left the world of industrial design to dedicate himself professionally to guitar-making.
It was by a chance meeting with the Yagüe brothers which provided Elias the opportunity to build his first guitar in their workshop after he tried to order one from them.
From the first cut of wood, Elias was spellbound by this new, mysterious world of lutherie. In addition to learning from the Yagüe brothers, Elias also befriended Juan Antonio Reyes Torres, another excellent guitar-maker who opened his doors to Elias.
After several years of apprenticing, Elias finally opened his own workshop in March of 2009 and has been building professionally on his own as an independent maker since then.

“My Lattice braced classical guitar has evolved over two decades to arrive at a significant stage of development.
It is made using only traditional timber but follows many ideas developed by the best modern Australian makers.
No balsa or carbon fibre are used in this construction. I also attempt to limit the weight while still utilizing the molded back and other enhancements.
Engelman’s Spruce is used because it is midway between European Spruce and Western Red Cedar in hardness , strength and tonal qualities.
My aim here is to provide a middle ground between Smallman and Marty with a very sweet tone in a loud full blown concert instrument.
Here is the ultimate lattice braced full bodied Concert Guitar.
This lattice contains no carbon fibre but is instead reinforced where required with cloth tape soaked in glue.
There is no balsa wood used inside this instrument.
The bracing material is the same as the soundboard itself. This uniformity of timber is more sonorous than a mix and provides great clarity and focus on the note.”

This is a 2017 Pre-loved Cedar concert Chamber guitar, is by Master Luthier Yulong Guo who is a world-class professional concert guitar. The action is 3.75mm and 3mm at the 12th fret, with room for adjustment. Excellent condition, but the case is scuffed
The craftsmanship in the woodworking and finish are evident and matched by the wonderful acoustic properties of this beautiful guitar.

For this Chamber Concert model the latest classical guitar technology was used: double-top with two ultra-thin layers of high-quality sound woods on either side of a layer of Nomex to give the strength needed for the durability of the top.
Back and sides are made of solid Indian Rosewood. The arched “violin back” gives the guitar amazing sound projection and volume, making it ideal for concert performances.
The upper bout of the body is sloped to give a ‘raised fingerboard’ in the style of Humphrey guitars.
The ebony fingerboard is 52 mm in width at the nut and 62 mm at the 12th fret. The action is 3.75mm and 3mm at the 12th fret, with room for adjustment
The fingerboard also extends to the 20th fret for the treble strings.
A rosewood armrest, ultra-smooth frets and a low string action make the Chamber Concert exceptionally easy and comfortable to play.
